Difficult Children

Many children can be difficult to handle. They can be extremely strong willed when it comes to behaving properly. One moment they are sweet and cooperative, and then, all of a sudden, they turn very angry and defiant. Sometimes, the smallest things may set off the child – food that they don't like, or having to go somewhere with their parents. It seems like they throw temper tantrums every hour or more.

Some children have very short fuses, and act before they think. If things do not go their way, they start yelling loudly, calling people names, and may even hit other kids. This misbehavior is not limited to any one particular place – the child may act wildly both at home and in public.

Does either of these descriptions sound like your kid? If your child does resemble any of the above two examples, then fear not because you are certainly not alone.

In every school district there are hundreds of children, every year, whose parents and teachers describe them as difficult, stubborn, rude, or just totally impossible altogether. When children exhibit these extreme behavioral problems, it can be extremely frustrating both to the teachers, and especially to parents.

The first thing to understand is that your child's strong-willed behavior is not some kind of conspiracy on his part to make everyone's life difficult. Your child is simply doing what argumentative strong-willed children do. These children tend to push the limits further, test harder, resist longer, use more drama, scream louder, much more than an average child.

School teachers label these children as the 10% of the students who cause 90% of school problems. Their parents may start to see these children as a life-long challenge, a pain, and a negative force in their lives.

But there's a better way of looking at things. Your strong-willed child is a challenge. You know that he will grow up to be a good person and well-behaved. Your affection and care for him will ensure this. And tender and patient parenting will overcome those "difficult" problems.
